When people think of Ha Long, they often imagine bustling tourist hubs like Tuan Chau Island or Bai Chay, famous for luxury resorts and large entertainment complexes. Yet tucked away in the heart of Quang Ninh Province lies Hon Gai—a destination that retains a charming natural beauty and a more authentic local atmosphere. Among the many beautiful islands and areas around Ha Long Bay, Hon Gai has its own unique appeal that’s worth exploring.

A Place to Escape and Unwind

Ha Long City is divided into two main zones: the Bai Chay entertainment area and the Hon Gai cultural and political center. These two districts are separated by Cua Luc Bay, connected by the iconic Bai Chay Bridge.

Many visitors choose to spend a few days in Hon Gai after staying in Bai Chay, seeking a quieter, more local experience before returning to the vibrant city life.

Located about 165 km from Hanoi and just 5 km from Bai Chay, Hon Gai makes an ideal destination for weekend getaways. For the best experience, arm yourself with a detailed Quang Ninh travel guide so you can explore Hon Gai’s hidden corners and sample its delicious local cuisine.

Top Places to Visit in Hon Gai

Hon Gai itself is divided into several smaller areas, each with its own highlights. These include the economic and cultural center, the political center in Column 8, residential areas like Column 5 and Cao Xanh, and coal mining zones such as Ha Lam, Ha Khanh, and Ha Tu.

Here’s what you shouldn’t miss:

1. Hon Gai Beach

Hon Gai Beach is an artificial beach—but don’t let that fool you into thinking it lacks charm. Opened in June 2021, this is one of the largest and most well-developed beaches in Northern Vietnam. It stretches about 900 meters long and 185 meters wide, with paved walkways, landscaped gardens, and beautiful seaside views.

Since opening, Hon Gai Beach has quickly become a popular spot for both domestic and international tourists looking for relaxation and a scenic seaside atmosphere.

2. Quang Ninh Museum

A must-visit for culture and history enthusiasts, the Quang Ninh Museum offers fascinating insights into the province’s heritage, natural environment, and coal mining legacy.

Housed in a striking black-glass building shaped like a giant box, the museum’s architecture itself has become a symbol of Ha Long Bay. Inside, the museum spans three levels:

  • First floor: Exhibits about the natural world and marine life
  • Second floor: Displays on Quang Ninh’s history from ancient to modern times, including artifacts from wartime and peace
  • Third floor: A simulated coal mine and mining tools, revealing the province’s industrial backbone

3. Bai Chay Bridge

For locals, Bai Chay Bridge is a vital traffic and economic link between Hon Gai and Bai Chay. For visitors, however, it’s a prime spot for stunning photos and panoramic views of Ha Long Bay.

This elegant cable-stayed bridge is an architectural highlight and a popular “check-in” location among travelers.

4. Coffee Culture

One of the best ways to enjoy Hon Gai’s laid-back atmosphere is to sit down for coffee with a view. Many cafés in Hon Gai boast breathtaking vistas of the beach and Ha Long Bay.

Some popular spots include:

  • Old Town Cafe — Famous for its scenic views of Hon Gai
  • Sky Bar (16th floor of Royal Lotus Ha Long Hotel)
  • Wander Station – Cake & Coffee (32 Van Lang, Hon Gai Ward)
  • Cam Cafe (3 Hai Phuc, Ha Long City)

Whether you’re a coffee lover or just looking for a peaceful escape, Hon Gai’s cafés are perfect for unwinding.

5. Hon Gai Church

Located in Nui Dao, Bach Dang Ward, Hon Gai Church is built in Romanesque style. With a length of 42 meters, width of 11 meters, and a 33-meter-high bell tower, it’s an architectural gem that offers insights into the region’s religious life and history.

6. Hon Gai Harbor and Seafood Market

Hon Gai Harbor serves as a major general seaport, connecting the region for both tourism and commercial shipping. Meanwhile, the Hon Gai Market is one of the oldest and liveliest in Ha Long Bay.

It’s an excellent place to explore local life and purchase fresh seafood. For the best selection—and the best prices—visit early in the morning when fishermen bring in their daily catch.

7. Bai Tho Mountain and Long Tien Pagoda

Bai Tho Mountain (Poem Mountain) is a source of pride for Ha Long Bay and Quang Ninh Province. Famous for its caves and diverse flora, including orchids, the mountain offers a panoramic view of Ha Long Bay from its summit.

However, please note that access to Bai Tho Mountain is currently restricted for safety and environmental preservation. Visitors now need permission from local authorities to climb it.

At the mountain’s foot lies Long Tien Pagoda, alongside the temple of Great King Tran Quoc Nghien. A visit here provides valuable insight into Northern Vietnam’s historical and religious culture.

8. Coastal Road

Recently completed, the Hon Gai coastal road is one of the most scenic drives in Ha Long City. Clean, fresh, and romantic, it offers stunning seaside views perfect for a relaxing walk or leisurely drive.

What to Eat in Hon Gai?

The culinary delights of Hon Gai are similar to those found throughout Ha Long Bay. Don’t miss these local specialties:

  • Fried squid eggs – crispy and savory
  • Sipunculus Nudus (Sa Sung) – a unique seafood delicacy
  • Horseshoe crab – prepared in various delicious styles
  • Sea clams – fresh and flavorful
