Saigon Central Post Office is one of Ho Chi Minh City’s most distinctive architectural landmarks and a familiar stop for tourists exploring the city center. But have you ever experienced this iconic building through a different lens — not just as a tourist attraction, but as a living piece of history?

Location & How to Get There

📍 Address: 2 Cong Xa Paris Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City

Located on one of the city’s prime pieces of real estate, Saigon Central Post Office sits directly opposite Notre Dame Cathedral. Its position along major roads makes it very convenient to reach from anywhere in the city center.

A Glimpse into History and Architecture

European Influence with Asian Charm

Built between 1886 and 1891 by renowned architect Gustave Eiffel (famous for designing the Eiffel Tower), Saigon Central Post Office is an outstanding example of Renaissance architecture. From its high vaulted ceilings to its elegant arched windows, the building resembles Europe’s early train stations, yet blends harmoniously with Asian decorative elements.

Striking Architectural Details

  • The post office’s long, curved ceiling resembles a giant wine barrel, tiled in cream-colored ceramics that enhance the sense of spaciousness.
  • The exterior boasts elaborate arched doorways, green louvered shutters, and pale yellow walls accented with white reliefs — all typical of French colonial architecture.
  • At the entrance, a large arch crowned with a vintage clock bears the inscription of the construction years: 1886 – 1891.
  • Inside, visitors will see two magnificent hand-painted maps:
    • Saigon et ses environs, 1892 (Saigon and its surroundings, 1892)
    • Lignes télégraphiques du Sud Vietnam et du Cambodge, 1936 (Telegraph lines of South Vietnam and Cambodia, 1936)

A Place That Preserves History

More than just an architectural gem, the Saigon Central Post Office is a place steeped in stories. Its interior features impressive steel arches and elegant columns. Daylight streams in through glass panels high above, creating a bright and airy atmosphere.

One of the most touching human stories associated with the post office is that of Mr. Duong Van Ngo, Vietnam’s last public letter writer. Now in his 90s, Mr. Ngo has spent over 70 years working at the Post Office. Though officially retired since 1990, he received special permission to continue working at a small desk in the lobby, offering letter-writing and translation services in French and English.

His clients include:

  • People who are illiterate and need help writing letters.
  • Those corresponding with relatives abroad.
  • Visitors seeking to communicate in foreign languages.

Over the decades, Mr. Ngo has helped countless people stay connected, penning thousands of letters that have traveled the world — each carrying stories of love, longing, and family ties. His presence adds a poignant human dimension to the historic building, bridging past and present.

Architectural Features to Admire

  • A grand dome-shaped ceiling that evokes nostalgia and creates a sense of openness.
  • Rows of green iron columns and shiny wooden benches along the aisles.
  • Preserved old mailboxes, vintage telephone booths, and souvenirs such as stamps and traditional letters.
  • A large portrait of Ho Chi Minh hanging prominently inside, symbolizing the country’s heritage.

  • A site rich in historical significance where key events of the Vietnam War unfolded.
  • Visitors can explore period rooms, secret bunkers, and lush gardens.

Ben Thanh Market

  • About 1 km from the post office.
  • Perfect for shopping and experiencing Saigon’s vibrant culinary scene.
