Nestled in the famous Thung Nham eco-tourism area, Thung Nham Bird Park is one of northern Vietnam’s most stunning nature reserves. Renowned for its pristine tropical forests, vast waterways, and diverse wildlife, it’s also the largest natural bird sanctuary in the region. Home to thousands of rare and precious birds, Thung Nham offers visitors a glimpse of nature’s untouched beauty.

Location

Thung Nham Bird Park is located in Hai Nham Village, Ninh Hai Commune, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh Province, Vietnam.

The park sits approximately 12 km east of Ninh Binh city center, right in the core of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex. It’s also near the well-known tourist spot Tam Coc – Bich Dong. From Bich Dong Pagoda, you drive about 4 km to reach Thung Nham, which borders districts like Gia Vien, Nho Quan, and Tam Diep City—all within Ninh Binh province.

Natural Beauty and Features

Set within the Hoa Lu special-use forest, Thung Nham features limestone mountains rising dramatically from a relatively flat northern coastal plain. These limestone formations are interspersed with creeks, seasonal floodplains, and lush valleys. The park’s elevation ranges from 10 to 281 meters above sea level, creating diverse habitats ideal for wildlife.

Thung Nham Bird Park spans over 300 hectares and shelters around 50,000 birds from more than 40 species. It hosts approximately 5,000 bird nests, and several species recorded here are listed in Vietnam’s Red Book for endangered wildlife.

The biodiversity is astounding:

  • 109 species of plants
  • 150 animal species, including:
    • 58 species of fish
    • 7 species of amphibians
    • 10 species of mammals

Especially remarkable is the spectacle at sunset. As the sun dips below the horizon, flocks of white storks, herons, and other birds return to roost, filling the sky with movement and sound. Cruising quietly on a boat through calm waters, listening to birdsong while watching these graceful creatures fly home, is an unforgettable experience.

Tien Lake

Located at the heart of Thung Nham Bird Park is Tien Lake, covering about 18 hectares. Its waters remain serenely blue throughout the seasons. Visitors can stroll around the lake or take a boat ride to admire the breathtaking scenery.

Best Time to Visit

While Thung Nham is open year-round, the best time to visit is during autumn, from September to November. During these months:

  • The weather is mild and pleasant.
  • Rainfall is minimal.
  • Hundreds of birds gather at dusk, offering magnificent sights for birdwatchers and photographers.

Park Opening Hours:

  • Open daily: 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Last entry: 5:30 PM

Essential Items to Bring

Since exploring Thung Nham involves outdoor activities, consider packing:

  • A hat or umbrella for sun and rain protection
  • Mosquito repellent to keep insects at bay
  • Comfortable sports shoes for long walks and climbing

Top Attractions in Thung Nham Bird Park

1. Vai Gioi Cave

Hidden deep inside a mountain, Vai Gioi Cave requires climbing over 400 stone steps. Inside, fascinating stalactites create mysterious formations. Historically, people came here to pray for favorable weather and bountiful harvests.

2. But Cave (Buddha Cave)

Stretching over 500 meters, But Cave is one of the park’s major attractions. Its name comes from a natural formation resembling a Buddha statue sitting beside a river, symbolizing peace and protection for locals and visitors alike.

3. Banyan Tree

A particularly intriguing sight is a banyan tree that locals say has mysteriously “moved” around an ancient temple in Thung Nham forest on three separate occasions—a story that adds to the park’s mystical atmosphere.

4. Mermaid Cave

Mermaid Cave winds for more than 1.5 km, showcasing unique stalactites of various shapes. Local legends speak of a mermaid who became stranded and turned to stone within the cave, lending an air of enchantment to the visit.

5. Aquarium Cave

True to its name, Aquarium Cave features stalactites shaped like corals, fish, and other sea creatures, resembling an intricate underwater palace carved in stone.

6. Valley of Love

The Valley of Love is a charming garden adorned with colorful flowers and ornamental plants. This beautifully landscaped area offers a romantic atmosphere amid the wild, untouched forest of Thung Nham.

A Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Thung Nham Bird Park’s primary allure is, of course, its avian population. Visitors can expect to see a variety of species including:

  • Teals
  • Flamingos
  • Warblers
  • Storks
  • Herons

Even if birdwatching isn’t your primary interest, the sheer sight of thousands of birds flying across the sky will leave you in awe.

A Natural Treasure in Ninh Binh

Thung Nham Bird Park is more than just a wildlife sanctuary—it’s a testament to the incredible biodiversity and natural beauty of Vietnam. Whether you’re a bird enthusiast, nature lover, or simply looking for a serene escape, this hidden gem in Ninh Binh should be at the top of your travel list.
