Discover Nam O Reef – Da Nang’s Hidden Mossy Wonderland

July 5, 2025

Tucked away just 17 km northwest of Da Nang city center, Nam O Reef is a stunning slice of Vietnam’s coastline, still largely untouched by mass tourism. This rocky shoreline stretches around 300 meters long and covers roughly 2 hectares, dazzling visitors with dramatic stone formations cloaked in vivid green moss, soft golden sand, and the endless blue of sky and sea.

A Touch of Legend ✨

Nam O Reef isn’t just beautiful—it’s also steeped in legend. Locals tell the tale of a celestial couple tasked by the Jade Emperor to build mountains and fill seas. While moving boulders, they stumbled, scattering rocks that formed the reef we see today.

How to Get There

📍 Location: Hoa Hiep Bac ward, Lien Chieu District, Da Nang

From Da Nang’s center, drive along Ton Duc Thang street, continue via Nguyen Luong Bang, pass Xuan Thieu Beach, and follow signs toward the fishing village. The journey is easy, making Nam O Reef a perfect day trip.

Top 5 Things to Do at Nam O Reef

🌊 Go Fishing with Locals
Hop aboard a fisherman’s boat for a hands-on fishing adventure. Arrange the trip directly with locals, and whatever you catch is yours to keep—a perfect souvenir from the sea.

🤿 Dive to See Coral Reefs
Don’t miss exploring Nam O’s colorful underwater world. Clear waters and vibrant coral make this a must-try for diving enthusiasts.

🌅 Catch the Sunrise or Sunset
Nam O is magical at dawn or dusk, with sunlight painting the mossy rocks and shimmering sea. The best time for photos? Early morning during low tide, when moss-covered stones peek above the water.

📸 Check-In with Nature
Photographers adore Nam O’s rugged beauty. Its blend of mossy green rocks, crashing waves, and tranquil atmosphere creates scenes that are pure coastal poetry.

🧂 Visit Nam O Fish Sauce Village
Close to the reef, the Nam O fish sauce craft village is a fascinating stop. Learn how locals produce this iconic Vietnamese condiment—and bring some home for delicious souvenirs.

When to Visit

Best time: January to March, when the rocks are vividly green with moss and tides are low for perfect photo ops.

Nam O Reef is still off the beaten tourist track, making it a serene alternative to Da Nang’s more crowded beaches. Pair it with visits to nearby attractions like My Khe Beach, Han Market, or even Hoi An for an unforgettable coastal adventure!
