Han River Bridge – The Rotating Jewel of Da Nang

The Han River Bridge is more than just a feat of engineering—it’s a powerful symbol of Da Nang’s growth, vitality, and spirit. As Vietnam’s first swing bridge, it’s an iconic landmark that connects not just the two sides of the Han River but also the past and the present of this dynamic coastal city.

The Story Behind the Han River Bridge

Many visitors wonder: Is this the Han River of Korea? The answer is no. Da Nang’s Han River, also known as Han Giang, earned its name from the days when locals stretched iron chains across its mouth to block enemy ships from invading. Though the origin of its name might seem simple, it’s deeply tied to stories of bravery and resistance—a testament to the city’s proud history.

The bridge itself was built entirely by Vietnamese engineers and workers. Construction began on September 2, 1998, and the bridge officially opened on March 29, 2000. It quickly became a symbol of Da Nang’s new chapter—a city shedding its past scars and stepping confidently into the future.

Where to Find the Han River Bridge

The Han River Bridge is centrally located in Da Nang, connecting the bustling western and eastern parts of the city.

  • Address: Tran Hung Dao Street, An Hai Tay Ward, Son Tra District, Da Nang.

Traveling from the city center takes around 40 minutes by car or motorbike. If you’re already exploring Da Nang, the bridge is easy to reach via routes like Duy Tan – Tran Thi Ly – Ngu Hanh Son – Le Van Hien – Su Van Hanh.

For an unforgettable experience, you can also explore the Han River by yacht—a service available since 2012, offering unique views of the city lights and bridges. Be sure to check prices and book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.

Architectural Features of the Han River Bridge

  • Total Length: 487.7 meters
  • Width: 12.9 meters
  • Number of Spans: 11 spans, each 33 meters long
  • Rotating Section: 122.7 meters (two cable-stayed spans)

The Han River Bridge rotates on its central axis, pivoting 90 degrees to allow larger vessels to pass through. This functionality is not just a technical marvel but a vivid symbol of Da Nang’s blend of tradition and modernity.

When Does the Han River Bridge Rotate?

Watching the bridge swing open is a highlight for many visitors. The rotation schedule varies depending on the day:

  • Monday to Friday:
    • Rotation begins at around 1:00 AM.
    • The bridge remains open until 2:00 or 4:00 AM, depending on river traffic.
  • Saturday and Sunday:
    • Due to higher tourist demand, the bridge rotates earlier.
    • Traffic stops at 10:45 PM, with rotation starting at 11:00 PM.
    • The bridge returns to its original position about an hour later.

Seeing this engineering wonder in action is a unique experience, especially against the sparkling backdrop of Da Nang’s nightscape.

Best Places to Watch the Han River Bridge

  • On a River Cruise: Drift along the Han River for a front-row seat to the bridge’s rotation. Many tours include views of other iconic bridges like the Dragon Bridge and Thuan Phuoc Bridge.
  • From Cafes and Rooftops: High-rise cafes or hotel rooftops offer panoramic views. Book a seat early on weekends for the best vantage point.
  • By the Riverside: Simply stroll along the riverbanks for close-up views and a relaxed atmosphere.

Many travelers also choose hotels near the Han River Bridge. Not only does this offer stunning night views, but it makes it easy to explore other nearby attractions such as:

  • Da Nang Love Bridge
  • Carp Turning into Dragon Statue
  • Dragon Bridge
  • Da Nang Museum

The Han River – A River of Many Moods

Beyond the bridge itself, the Han River weaves through Da Nang like a living ribbon, transforming with each hour of the day:

Gentle Mornings

In the soft glow of sunrise, the Han River lies still and peaceful. Mist hovers above the surface, and the reflections of dim streetlights glimmer like silver threads. It’s a scene of quiet beauty, perfect for early risers seeking serenity.

Vibrant Afternoons

As the sun sets, the river comes alive. Golden and pink hues dance on the water’s surface. Boats come and go, and the sounds of whistles and engines blend with the laughter of locals and tourists. The river seems to laugh along, its waves playfully tapping the sides of ships.

Brilliant Nights

When night falls, Da Nang and the Han River shine brightest. Neon lights and the glow of bridges cast colorful patterns on the water. The bridges don their luminous “coats,” transforming the river into a dazzling spectacle. The Han River becomes not just a waterway but a canvas for Da Nang’s vibrant urban art.

Whether you’re an architecture lover, a photography enthusiast, or simply a traveler curious to experience Da Nang’s beating heart, the Han River Bridge is a must-see. Its rotating spans, historical significance, and ever-changing beauty capture the soul of a city always moving forward—yet always remembering its roots.
