Just 4 km from Hoi An Ancient Town, Bay Mau Coconut Forest in Cam Thanh Commune is one of Central Vietnam’s most unique and immersive eco-tourism destinations. With winding waterways, thick nipa palm groves, and exhilarating basket boat rides, it offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical depth, and local culture.

🗺️ Location & Origin of the Name

📍 Village 7, Cam Thanh Commune, Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province

Bay Mau Coconut Forest is situated near the Cua Dai Bridge, making it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the Hoi An area. The name “Bay Mau” (meaning “Seven Acres”) originated from the forest’s original size. Although it now spans hundreds of acres, the historic name remains a nostalgic nod to its humble beginnings.

📜 Historical Significance

During the Vietnam War, Bay Mau Coconut Forest served as a key revolutionary base. The dense nipa palm canopy shielded local guerrillas from aerial attacks and enemy patrols. Ambushes were successfully staged here, helping the local resistance fight off hundreds of raids. For its vital role, Cam Thanh Commune was awarded the prestigious title: Hero of the People’s Armed Forces.

🌱 A Unique Ecosystem in the Heart of the City

Despite being close to Hoi An’s ancient streets, the forest feels like a world away. Set along the Hoai, Thu Bon, and De Vong Rivers, the area’s brackish water environment is ideal for the growth of nipa palms. With clear canals, green water, and a thick tropical canopy, the area is often called:

✨ “The Mekong Delta of Central Vietnam.”

🛶 Top Experiences at Bay Mau Coconut Forest

1. Basket Boat Rides (Thúng Chai)

Sit in a traditional round basket boat as skilled locals navigate narrow waterways flanked by dense coconut groves. Guides often perform boat spinning tricks, sing folk songs, and share fascinating stories about local life and wartime history.

2. Basket Dance Performances

Watch rowers perform acrobatic stunts on spinning boats while keeping perfect balance — a thrilling and fun cultural display that delights visitors of all ages.

3. Fishing Net Experience

Try your hand at traditional fishing methods, from casting nets to pulling up your own catch — perfect for family bonding and photography.

4. Local Handicrafts & Coconut Products

Discover houses roofed entirely with coconut leaves, shop for handmade souvenirs, and learn how locals utilize every part of the coconut tree in daily life.

🧑‍🌾 Meet the Heart of the Forest: The Locals

Most basket boat rowers are long-time residents of the area — friendly, hospitable, and full of knowledge. According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Sen, a local from Van Lang Village:

“We’ve rowed these basket boats for decades. Our job is to make people feel welcome, safe, and happy — even if we don’t speak the same language.”

Locals also make an effort to learn basic English phrases to better communicate with international visitors, ensuring a warm and inclusive atmosphere.

📷 Picture-Perfect in All Seasons

Bay Mau Coconut Forest is a year-round destination. On sunny days, the vibrant green of the palms reflects on the calm waterways. During Lunar New Year (Tet), the forest becomes even more lively, drawing thousands of visitors with festive decorations, cultural shows, and boat parades.
