Only about 100 km south of Hanoi lies Ninh Binh—a gem of northern Vietnam that makes for an unforgettable day trip. Whether you’re drawn by breathtaking landscapes, fascinating cultural sites, or delicious local cuisine, Ninh Binh delivers an experience that feels both relaxing and adventurous. If you’ve got just one free day and wonder where to go, a Ninh Binh one-day tour is the perfect choice.

Let’s explore why this ancient capital is a must-visit, the best time to go, how to get there, and what a one-day itinerary might look like!

Ninh Binh: Land of Ancient Capitals

Nicknamed the “land of the ancient capital” (Co Do), Ninh Binh is home to countless stunning landscapes and cultural treasures. Among its most famous attractions are:

  • Phat Diem Stone Cathedral
  • Bai Dinh Pagoda
  • Trang An Scenic Complex
  • Tam Coc – Bich Dong
  • Mua Cave

It’s no wonder millions of tourists flock here every year, making Ninh Binh one of Vietnam’s top travel destinations.

When Is the Best Time for a Ninh Binh Day Trip?

While Ninh Binh is beautiful year-round, two periods stand out as the ideal time to visit:

Spring (January – March):
Cool, pleasant weather makes it perfect for sightseeing, especially if you’re interested in combining your trip with spiritual tourism at places like Bai Dinh Pagoda, Trang An, or Phat Diem Cathedral.

Early Summer (April – June):
Ecotourism spots like Tam Coc – Bich Dong, Van Long Lagoon, Cuc Phuong National Park, and Trang An are at their most vibrant. You’ll catch golden rice fields in Tam Coc or see white butterflies fluttering through Cuc Phuong forest.

If you can’t visit during these times, check the weather forecast and plan accordingly!

How to Get to Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh’s proximity to Hanoi makes it super convenient for a day trip. You’ve got plenty of options:

  • By Bus: Buses to Ninh Binh run from all major Hanoi bus stations. It’s cheap and easy.
  • By Limousine Van: Several luxury limousine services shuttle passengers between Hanoi and Ninh Binh for around 120,000 VND (approx. $5 USD) per person—a comfortable and affordable option.
  • By Car or Motorbike: Driving yourself gives you flexibility to stop and admire the scenery along the Phap Van – Cau Gie expressway. The trip takes roughly 2 hours.

Suggested Itineraries for a One-Day Ninh Binh Tour

Because time is limited, it’s helpful to plan your day carefully. Here are two sample itineraries to help you make the most of your Ninh Binh adventure.

Itinerary 1: Hoa Lu – Mua Cave – Tam Coc – Bich Dong

8:00 AM – Arrive in Ninh Binh
Head straight to Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam, and visit the historic temples dedicated to Kings Dinh and Le. Spend about 3 hours exploring the site and learning about Vietnam’s royal past.

11:00 AM – Visit Mua Cave
Next, make your way to Mua Cave (Hang Mua). Climb nearly 500 stone steps to enjoy a panoramic view of Tam Coc’s rice fields and limestone peaks—a favorite spot for stunning photos. Take 3–4 hours to explore, rest, and have lunch.

2:30 PM – Explore Tam Coc – Bich Dong
Afterward, head to Bich Dong Pagoda, nestled into limestone cliffs. Wander through the ancient temple complex before going boating in Tam Coc, often called “Ha Long Bay on land.” You’ll glide through emerald rice fields and beneath limestone mountains. Wrap up your Ninh Binh day trip in the late afternoon.

Itinerary 2: Trang An – Bai Dinh Pagoda

8:00 AM – Arrive in Trang An
Start your day with a tranquil boat tour through the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll pass through cave tunnels and hidden valleys surrounded by karst mountains. Allow about 4–5 hours for the full boat route and a delicious local lunch.

1:00 PM – Visit Bai Dinh Pagoda
In the afternoon, visit Bai Dinh Pagoda, the largest Buddhist temple complex in Southeast Asia. Marvel at its massive statues, giant bell tower, and countless Buddha sculptures. It’s a serene place perfect for spiritual exploration and beautiful photography.

Must-Try Dishes in Ninh Binh

A visit to Ninh Binh wouldn’t be complete without tasting some of its unique local delicacies. Here’s what to look out for:

Mountain Goat (Dê Núi)

Ninh Binh’s mountain goat meat is famous across Vietnam for its tender, fragrant flavor. Try it prepared in various styles—grilled, steamed, stir-fried, or made into a tangy goat salad. It’s a must for adventurous eaters!

Burnt Rice (Cơm Cháy)

Cơm cháy is crispy rice, lightly golden and fragrant, often served with savory sauces made from mountain goat or pork. It’s a crunchy snack that makes a perfect souvenir to bring home.

Yen Mac Fermented Pork Roll (Nem Chua Yên Mạc)

This unique fermented pork roll combines lean pork and crunchy pork skin, seasoned and wrapped in guava leaves. Slightly tangy and incredibly flavorful, it’s often enjoyed with a glass of beer or local rice wine.

Kim Son Wine

Round off your Ninh Binh culinary experience with a sip of Kim Son wine. Distilled from local ingredients and fresh spring water, it’s aromatic and smooth—perfect alongside your mountain goat dishes or Yen Mac rolls.

Why Choose Ninh Binh for a Day Trip?

Ninh Binh is a perfect destination for travelers who want:

✅ Natural beauty and photogenic landscapes
✅ Fascinating history and culture
✅ Delicious, unique cuisine
✅ Easy access from Hanoi for a one-day escape
